My weirdly specific curse is that I can understand computer hardware pretty well, but the second you start trying to tell me anything about programming or coding you’ve lost me and probably won’t be finding me anytime soon.

If you people start giving Hobie Brown the Eddie Munson effect I’m going to start killing. His ass would not be listening to arctic monkeys be so fr

i like never do this & im sorry to hijack yr post (especially seeing as you are a person i do not know!!) but another thing im seeing on these playlists is an absolutely abysmal amount of black artists. spider-punk is and has always been a black character, and black people are frequently pushed out of alternative and subcultural spaces, so i’m going to offer some black punk artists i personally enjoy for i guess playlist consideration aimed towards some of the ppl in the notes, although this isn’t definitive & hobie’s taste will of course not necessarily be my own.

also to note before we get into this is that punk is a culture of resistance. hobie in specific (though i don’t know how much of this will be part of his characterization in the spiderverse trilogy going forward—he’s pretty different in atsv, which isn’t a bad thing) has been depicted in the comics as a homeless teenager living under a fascist government. regardless of whether or not that depiction is accurate for this version of hobie is irrelevant for now; the point i’m making is that his attachment to punk is not purely aesthetic in nature. i think keeping the radical aspects of punk in general and of spider-punk in specific in mind are important when discussing the character.

anyway.

  • death (this one is kind of essential in terms of punk history. they started recording songs under the band name death in 1971 and disbanded in 1977, but their music was only relatively recently properly released. they’ve been occasionally cited as the first punk band ever.)
  • pure hell (another early & extremely influential punk group, this one from 1974. in contrast with the isolation death operated within, pure hell were heavily involved in the early punk scene.)
  • bad brains (originally an american jazz group who became punk with a reggae fusion. they cite pure hell as an early influence, which is pretty cool.)
  • x-ray spex (70s english punk band fronted by poly styrene, whose vocals greatly influenced the later riot grrrl movement. notable for lyrical attacks on commercialism and corporate artifice.)
  • zulu (i fucking love zulu so much guys you should all listen to zulu right now. they’re frequently described as powerviolence, which is accurate, but they also incorporate elements from various historically black genres, like funk, jazz, & soul. you can listen to one zulu album and get a ton of different musical experiences it rules.)
  • bob vylan (london-based punk rap duo. to me they’re like the ideal of what punk set out to be in the first place, ideologically speaking. i don’t even know what else to say here. if you’re interested in modern punk and aren’t listening to bob vylan you should be. they’re insanely skilled and deserve to be the center of the conversation.)

this post has gone on long enough you get the gist. & if you actually feel inspired enough to want to make a 100% accurate spider-punk playlist, get into your local scene and see what’s playing there. it’s what he would want, probably.

i’d also recommend big joanie, soul glo, the muslims and minority threat!!

adding onto this: bob vylan has a fucking crazy good name for a band and also I JUST listened to We Live Here and it’s insanely good

back in old-timey america the sentiment behind 'scotus serves for life' was the idea that they would not be beholden to the president who appointed them,

what they did not account for is that now the cult of trump that literally stormed the capital , something that would have started a civil war back then, was brushed under the rug and they now have illegitimate judges packed in the scotus

And because of him now conservatives have free reign to shoot or run over protesters. If it weren't for that I'd think the best course of action would be to protest right outside their houses. Make them squirm for believing they get to pass their dogma as law and think they can get away with it

Lol yeah, but honestly even if it hadn’t gotten to this point I think letting the scotus having life terms is extremely weird and unhelpful since literally everyone else has limited terms they have to run for again if they want to keep them after their term is up. Presidents only get two, that used to just be a precedent thing because George Washington turned down a third term and he gets mythologized as some amazing incredible leader who was so honorable and everyone that follows him should live up to his example… But then fdr got four terms in a row and after that everyone was like ‘actually no we’re making it law now, no more than two four year terms then you’re out of the game for good, we don’t want monarchs… But yeah the people they appoint to the scotus can stick around until they die, that’s fine.’ It gets billed as a 'checks and balances’ system but it’s a pretty crap one. Frankly I think the legislative and judicial branches should all have a limit on how many terms they can serve like the president, because even though legislators have terms they have to run for every time one is up, a lot of them end up staying for decades and decades because it’s highly unlikely they’ll be booted out by someone who tries to run against them unless they fuck up Real Bad™.

Some tumblr users are so smug re: today’s twitter fuckening like 2017 never happened (and could happen again).

All I’m saying is: don’t stan social media platforms because they will bite you in the ass.

Some people in fandom desperately need to become obsessed with something SUPER niche and obscure. Something with like 10 active fans at the very most. Something with only 6 fics if you’re very lucky, all but one written by the same dedicated fan. Something where when you do find a fan account, it’s been innactive for years. Something that’s not available on streaming and its only physical release was never released in your country. Let it humble you.

All hope is not lost

Also what I haven’t seen people talking about is the other changes he made to student loan repayment that are NOT affected by the SC ruling. IE He halved the required payments for the income based plans from 20% of “Discretionary Income” to 10%. And if that isn’t enough to cover the interest, the government will be picking up the tab on that interest now instead of it being added to the principal. The quiet, policy wonk shit is what will actually get changes made. He was smart, he used the forgiveness to distract the republicans from what he was actually doing. I’d bet good money that everything was already written for the HEA approach well in advance.
